1.  To try or struggle to win, either in a contest or against difficulties; to deal (with).

2.  To claim to be true.

 

 

Example One:  

This man is training to contend with the heat of running across the Sahara Desert.   He contends that he will be able to do it and people believe him.  

 

 

Example Two:

 
These people are ready to  contend  with just about anything!
