To hold or keep in place

 

 

Example One:  

A retaining wall holds dirt back from roads. A tooth retainer holds teeth back. 
 

 

 

Example Two:

 

Students get together to review their work and try to retain, or remember, information -- to hold it in their minds.

Students in grade school are sometimes retained and have to stay in the same grade for two years.
